The Karthigai Deepam controversy near the Arulmigu Subramaniya Swamy Temple in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, has drawn a response from the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat emphasized that Hindus in Tamil Nadu are capable of resolving the issue themselves and that the organization will intervene only if absolutely necessary.
Bhagwat Calls for Patience
Speaking at an event marking 100 years of the RSS, Bhagwat was asked whether the dispute should be taken up at the national level. He replied, “The Tirupparankundram case is still under judicial consideration. Let the court decide. If further action is required, it will be taken.”
Hindus’ Awakening Key to Resolution
Bhagwat highlighted that the awakening of Hindus in Tamil Nadu is likely sufficient to bring about the desired outcome. “Local Hindu organizations are already active and will inform us if intervention is needed. I believe the matter can be resolved based on the strength and initiative of the Hindus themselves,” he said. He stressed that the RSS sees no need to escalate the issue and expressed confidence that the resolution will ultimately favor the Hindu community.
Background of the Dispute
The controversy erupted after the Madras High Court’s Madurai Bench, led by Justice G.R. Swaminathan, granted devotees of the Arulmigu Subramaniya Swamy Temple permission to light the traditional Karthigai Deepam on a stone lamp post on Tirupparankundram Hill, near a dargah. The DMK-led Tamil Nadu government has appealed the order in the Supreme Court. Opposition parties, including Congress, have also moved to initiate impeachment proceedings against Justice Swaminathan over the verdict.
