New Delhi: Preparations are underway at Rashtrapati Bhavan for the Republic Day 2026 celebrations, and this year’s ‘At Home Reception’ promises to be especially unique. The invitation cards for the event showcase the traditional handicrafts of India’s Eight North-Eastern States (Ashtalakshmi States), highlighting the country’s rich cultural diversity while promoting local artisans.
Showcasing North-East India’s Craftsmanship
The specially designed invitations celebrate the centuries-old artisanal skills of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura, and Sikkim. Each design reflects the vibrant cultural traditions of these regions, presenting India’s heritage to a global audience. Rashtrapati Bhavan’s initiative not only recognizes the creativity of these artisans but also encourages them to continue preserving their legacy in modern times.
Promoting ‘Vocal for Local’
The invitation cards align with the government’s ‘Vocal for Local’ and ‘Make in India’ campaigns, aimed at empowering local craftsmen and entrepreneurs while fostering cultural exchange and economic cooperation. By incorporating these handcrafted designs, the invitations symbolize India’s commitment to celebrating homegrown talent and promoting indigenous arts on a national and international stage.
Republic Day: A Celebration of the Constitution and National Pride
Republic Day, celebrated on 26 January, commemorates the adoption of India’s Constitution in 1950. The day is marked by one of the country’s most prestigious events—the Republic Day Parade on Rajpath in New Delhi, featuring contingents from the armed forces, vibrant tableaux, and various cultural performances.
The celebrations provide citizens with a close view of the military traditions and national institutions, culminating in the ‘Beating the Retreat’ ceremony at Vijay Chowk. Here, bands from the Army, Navy, and Air Force perform, bringing the formal festivities to a grand close.
This year, with the Ashtalakshmi-inspired invitations, the ‘At Home Reception’ not only honors India’s constitutional values but also shines a spotlight on the country’s diverse cultural tapestry, giving due recognition to the artisans who keep these traditions alive.
