Rain Alert Issued for Delhi-NCR; Relief from Pollution Likely

New Delhi: Residents of Delhi-NCR battling severe air pollution may soon get much-needed relief as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a rain and thunderstorm alert for the region. According to the forecast, weather conditions are expected to change after January 23, with rainfall and strong winds likely across several areas.

The IMD has predicted widespread rain accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph. This weather system is expected to help wash away pollutants, leading to a noticeable improvement in air quality across the national capital and adjoining regions.

Weather to Turn Colder After Rain

While the recent sunshine has provided daytime relief from the biting cold, the IMD warned that rainfall may bring back intense winter conditions. On January 23, the maximum temperature is likely to hover around 20°C, while the minimum may drop to 10°C. Rainfall may occur intermittently throughout the day.

Following the weather change, January 24 is expected to be colder, with temperatures dipping further to a minimum of around 7°C, accompanied by moderate fog. Moderate fog conditions are also likely to persist on January 21 and 22 across NCR.

Pollution Levels Remain Alarming

Despite the forecast, air quality in Delhi-NCR continues to remain in the ‘very poor’ to ‘severe’ category. AQI levels were recorded at 352 in Noida Sector-1, 341 in Sector-116, and 423 in Loni, Ghaziabad, which falls under the hazardous category. In Delhi, AQI readings crossed 380 in Rohini and Jahangirpuri, indicating serious health concerns.

Experts believe that rainfall and strong winds will significantly reduce pollution levels, though residents may have to brace for 2–3 days of harsh cold thereafter. The weather department has advised people to remain cautious, limit outdoor activities, and take adequate measures to protect themselves from cold conditions.
