New Delhi:
Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has raised serious allegations over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Gujarat, accusing authorities of systematically removing voters from the list in areas where the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is electorally vulnerable.
Citing documents shared by the Gujarat Congress, Gandhi claimed that the voter verification exercise was not a routine administrative process but a “planned, organised and strategic theft of votes.” He also alleged collusion between the central government and the Election Commission of India (ECI), questioning the impartiality of the constitutional body.
‘Voters Disappear Where BJP Faces Defeat’
In a post on social media platform X, Rahul Gandhi said that thousands of objections were filed under the same name during the SIR process, calling it “deeply shocking and dangerous.” He alleged that voters belonging to specific communities and Congress-supporting booths were selectively targeted and removed.
“Wherever the BJP anticipates defeat, voters themselves are made to disappear from the system,” Gandhi wrote, asserting that the exercise disproportionately affected opposition strongholds.
Allegations of a Nationwide Pattern
The Congress leader further claimed that the same pattern had earlier been observed in constituencies such as Aland and Rajura, and is now being replicated in Gujarat. According to him, the SIR mechanism is gradually being imposed in multiple states, including Rajasthan, following a common blueprint.
“This is not an isolated incident but part of a larger design being implemented wherever SIR is enforced,” Gandhi stated.
‘Weapon Against Constitutional Rights’
Terming the process a direct assault on democratic principles, Gandhi alleged that SIR has been transformed into a weapon to undermine the constitutional guarantee of ‘one person, one vote’. He claimed the objective was to allow the ruling party to determine electoral outcomes rather than the electorate.
“The most serious truth,” he said, “is that the Election Commission is no longer acting as the guardian of democracy but has become an active participant in this alleged conspiracy of vote theft.”
Documents Shared by Congress
Rahul Gandhi also shared a voter list and an official letter released by the Gujarat Congress as evidence to support his claims. The party has demanded transparency and accountability in the voter revision process and has sought immediate intervention to safeguard electoral integrity.
The Election Commission and the BJP are yet to issue a formal response to the allegations.
