Even in the era of e-books, printed books continue to hold their appeal. Publishers are now focusing on new authors and topics to attract fresh readers. Genres such as history, sociology, and biographies are gaining popularity, while Gen-Z readers are showing a keen interest in books related to career development and mental well-being.
Print Holds Its Ground
Ram Tripathi notes that the rise of e-books has raised concerns about the future of printed literature, with fears that traditional readers are dwindling. In response, publishing houses are experimenting with content tailored to contemporary readers, especially Gen-Z.
However, Ashok Maheshwari, Managing Director of Rajkamal Prakashan, disagrees. He believes that printed books still enjoy immense respect and that the print medium will never disappear. Aditi Maheshwari, CEO of Vani Prakashan, adds that while there was a surge in e-book readership during the COVID-19 pandemic, readers are now returning to physical books.
The Credibility of Print
When asked why print continues to thrive, Ashok emphasizes its reliability. “Even today, the authenticity of news or information is often verified through newspapers. Printed books carry that trust.” Aditi points out that modern readers are showing strong interest not just in fiction but in literature that explores history, sociology, and biographies. Books on LGBTQ+ themes are also witnessing strong sales.
Cultural Insight Matters
While interest in poetry and traditional storytelling appears to be declining, Ashok observes that readers are gravitating towards topics that relate to real life. Autobiographies, biographies, and memoirs are especially popular. Aditi notes that readers are increasingly seeking books that enhance cultural understanding, preferring titles that provide insights into other cultures.
New Authors in Demand
Gen-Z readers are particularly drawn to works by new authors. “They want content that connects with their own experiences,” says Ashok. Additionally, books focused on career growth and mental stability are highly sought after. Translated novels in Hindi from other languages are also enjoying strong sales.
The AI Influence
Observing literary trends over the past five to six years, Ashok remarks that even poetry is evolving, with new experimental formats emerging. Publishers are also incorporating AI in literature to enhance engagement, which has resonated with readers. However, he cautions that original literary works must be preserved amidst this technological shift.
