Prime Minister Modi Holds Up a Mirror to Maverick Donald Trump

New Delhi: Global politics is shaped by both institutional factors and influential leaders. While structural factors such as international systems, economic strength, and military power determine long-term trends, individual leaders can have a decisive impact during critical moments. In 2025, some leaders have left a particularly strong mark on the world stage.

Trump’s Influence:
U.S. President Donald Trump has been one of the most influential personalities in global politics this year. His foreign policy was characterized by a “give-and-take” approach, challenging old alliances, withdrawing from several international agreements, and favoring bilateral over multilateral cooperation. On the domestic front, Trump implemented significant changes, including protectionist trade policies and tariff impositions. While supporters credit him for reducing government overreach, critics argue that his policies have marginalized vulnerable populations and could harm long-term U.S. prosperity.

Xi Jinping’s Role:
Another leader shaping global dynamics is China’s President Xi Jinping, who has emerged as the country’s most powerful leader since Mao Zedong. Xi’s strength lies in centralized authority, long-term policy planning, and emphasis on national power and stability. This year, China expanded its global influence through trade, technology, military presence, and diplomatic investments, particularly in the Global South. Xi has maintained a firm stance on sovereignty and regional integrity, including issues like Taiwan and the South China Sea.

Vladimir Putin’s Consolidation:
Russian President Vladimir Putin continues to consolidate power despite the Ukraine conflict. His tenure has concentrated political authority, leaving little space for opposition or civil society. Putin’s foreign policy emphasizes assertive engagement with the West while strengthening ties with non-Western nations. By 2025, it is evident that the resolution of the Ukraine war will largely follow Putin’s terms.

Modi’s Leadership:
India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi stands out as a pragmatic and strategic global leader. Despite Trump’s tariff challenges, India’s economy maintained strong performance. Domestically, Modi’s government prioritized economic growth, infrastructure, and digital transformation. On the security front, India has remained influential and resilient.

Balancing Global Relations:
In foreign policy, Modi has pursued a balanced and practical approach, positioning India as a key power in a rapidly multipolar world. His efforts to strengthen relations across the Indo-Pacific region and active participation in forums like G20, BRICS, and Quad demonstrate India’s commitment to collaborative global leadership while maintaining strategic autonomy.
