New Delhi: The brutal killing of 24-year-old MBA student Angel Chakma in Tripura has shocked the nation and reignited urgent debates on racial discrimination within India. An appeal has been made to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take immediate action to prevent such heinous acts in the future.
A National Tragedy
Angel Chakma was attacked in a college canteen, allegedly due to racial slurs against his younger brother. Despite battling for his life for 17 days in a Dehradun hospital, he succumbed to his injuries. Sajra Debbarma, President of the Tripura Swadeshi Students’ Union, said, “What happened to Angel Chakma is not just his death—it is the death of all people from the Northeast. If the central government cannot ensure respect, dignity, and love for the people of the Northeast, then we will protect ourselves. The culprits must be punished without exception.”
Racial Prejudice Across India
The incident highlights a wider problem of racial prejudice, not limited to the Northeast. Instances of discrimination against people from North-East India are frequent in Delhi, Mumbai, and other metropolitan cities, where they are mocked with derogatory terms. Similar attitudes are displayed against migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
Angel’s Final Words
Angel’s father, Tarun Chakma, a patriotic BSF officer, revealed that Angel insisted until his last breath, “I am Indian, not Chinese.” However, the attackers—allegedly including a fugitive from Nepal—stabbed him repeatedly in the neck and back. Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has assured that the culprits will not be spared. So far, five accused have been apprehended.
A Call for National Awareness
The incident exposes the deep-seated bias and brutal mentality that Northeastern communities face. Shujaat Ali Qadri, Chairman of the Muslim Students Organization, raised concerns about the culture of humiliation and prejudice that extends beyond the Northeast.
Appeal to the Prime Minister
The article urges Prime Minister Modi to address the nation on this issue, highlighting that the Northeast has produced world-class talents like boxer MC Mary Kom, footballer Baichung Bhutia, sprinter Hima Das, actor Danny Dengzongpa, and musician Bhupen Hazarika. The message emphasizes that the country must treat all its citizens as equal brothers and sisters, irrespective of region.
Responsibility of Parents and Society
The tragedy also raises questions about societal values and parenting. The perpetrators are sons, brothers, and fathers themselves. Educating parents to instill respect, equality, and civility in their children is crucial. Events like Angel Chakma’s murder are not only a national shame but a moral failure that the entire society must confront.
