PM Modi Visits Historic Cathedral Church of the Redemption in Delhi for Christmas

New Delhi, India: On the occasion of Christmas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in a prayer service at the Cathedral Church of the Redemption, one of Delhi’s oldest and most historic Christian churches. The service included prayers, Christmas carols, and hymns, with a special prayer offered for the Prime Minister by Bishop Wright, Reverend Dr. Paul Swaroop. Devout Christians from Delhi and across Northern India attended the gathering in large numbers.

A Church Steeped in British History

The Cathedral Church of the Redemption, also known as the Viceroy’s Church, was built during the British colonial era and is located in Lutyens’ Delhi, near the President’s House and the Parliament. It serves as the main cathedral of the Delhi Diocese for Northern India.

The church’s construction began in 1927 under the supervision of British Viceroy Lord Irwin, designed by British architect Henry Alexander Nesbit Mead. Its design draws inspiration from the Church of Il Redentore in Venice, integrating seamlessly with the Lutyens’ Delhi architectural style.

The construction continued until 1935, though it opened for public worship on 18 January 1931, and was officially dedicated by the Bishop of Lahore on 15 February 1931. It earned the nickname “Viceroy’s Church” as Lord Irwin regularly attended prayers there and laid its foundation himself.

Architectural Marvel

Constructed with white and red sandstone from Dholpur, the church features high arches, domed ceilings, and excellent ventilation that keeps the interiors cool during summer. It houses a historic pipe organ from 1931 and several beautiful paintings.

After India’s independence in 1947, the church became part of the Church of North India (CNI), Delhi Diocese. While it symbolizes Delhi’s colonial heritage, the Cathedral Church of the Redemption has evolved into a spiritual center for diverse communities. Special celebrations are held here every Christmas and Easter.
