Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a phone conversation with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, a vocal critic of former U.S. President Donald Trump and a longstanding friend of India. During the 45-minute discussion, the leaders reviewed progress in the India-Brazil strategic partnership and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties in the coming year.
Focus on the Global South and AI Summit
Both leaders emphasized the importance of bilateral cooperation for the Global South, a group of developing and least-developed countries. Prime Minister Modi also expressed hope that President Lula would participate in the upcoming AI Summit during his visit to India.
Upcoming Visit
President Lula is scheduled to visit India from 19 to 21 February 2026, during which PM Modi said he eagerly looks forward to welcoming him. The two leaders also pledged to work together on UN Security Council reforms and reiterated their commitment to peace in Gaza and multilateralism.
Trump, Tariffs, and Global Issues
Lula, like India, faced 50% U.S. tariffs last year amid diplomatic tensions with the Trump administration. He has openly criticized Trump’s trade policies, accusing the former U.S. president of attempting to dominate global decision-making. Both India and Brazil have declined invitations to participate in Trump’s peace board concerning the Gaza conflict, focusing instead on independent multilateral solutions.
The conversation underscores the growing strategic convergence between India and Brazil, highlighting shared interests on global economic, security, and multilateral platforms.
