New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently shared his reflections on the deep cultural ties between Kashi (Varanasi) and Tamil Nadu, during the ongoing Kashi-Tamil Sangamam, a celebration of language, literature, and tradition. He candidly admitted his regret at not being able to learn Tamil, emphasizing the importance of such initiatives in fostering national unity.
Kashi, the city of Lord Shiva’s Baba Vishwanath, has historically shared strong cultural and spiritual links with Tamil Nadu, home to the sacred pilgrimage of Rameswaram. Tenkasi in Tamil Nadu is often referred to as the “South Kashi.” Esteemed scholars and saints, including Pujya Kumaraguru Swamiji, have long nurtured these bonds, while iconic poet Subramania Bharati drew inspiration from Kashi’s intellectual and spiritual environment for his nationalism and literary works.
The Kashi-Tamil Sangamam, inaugurated in 2022, has since grown into a vibrant platform connecting scholars, students, artists, and cultural enthusiasts from Tamil Nadu and across India. The events include literary discussions, cultural performances, exhibitions, and dialogue sessions. Technology has been leveraged in recent editions to ensure language barriers do not hinder participation. The third edition emphasized the Indian Knowledge System, while the fourth edition, held on 2 December 2025, focused on “Learn Tamil” (Tamil Karkalam), giving participants a unique opportunity to engage with the Tamil language.
Special initiatives during this year’s Sangamam included an expedition from Tenkasi to Kashi, health camps, digital literacy programs, and tributes to the legendary Pandya king, Adi Veer Prakaram Pandiyan. Exhibitions were held at Namo Ghat, and academic sessions took place at Banaras Hindu University, complemented by extensive cultural programs. PM Modi noted that the enthusiasm of young participants was especially heartening, reflecting their deep connection to cultural roots and the opportunity to showcase talent.
The Sangamam’s grand conclusion was hosted in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, attended by eminent personalities including the late Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan. The Prime Minister highlighted how such platforms not only strengthen cultural awareness but also promote educational dialogue, public engagement, and national unity. He described the event as a tangible expression of the “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat” vision, fostering harmony across India’s diverse traditions.
PM Modi also linked the timing of the Sangamam to India’s seasonal and cultural festivals, including Makar Sankranti, Uttarayan, Pongal, and Magh Bihu, which celebrate the sun, nature, and agriculture while reinforcing social cohesion and collective participation. He extended his greetings to all citizens, noting that such shared heritage and community engagement deepen national unity.
