PM Modi Opens Parliament Discussion on ‘Vande Mataram,’ Tracing Its 150-Year Legacy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday initiated a special discussion in the Lok Sabha marking 150 years of the iconic song ‘Vande Mataram’. The national song, originally composed by Banik Chandra Chattopadhyay in 1870, played a pivotal role in India’s freedom struggle and continues to hold immense historical and cultural significance.

Origins of ‘Vande Mataram’

‘Vande Mataram’ was first published on 7 November 1875 in the literary magazine Bangadarshan. Banik Chandra Chattopadhyay, a leading Bengali novelist and thinker of his time, wrote the song as part of his novel ‘Anandamath’, which was published later in 1882. The song glorifies India as a mother, celebrating her beauty, strength, and nature. Its language is a refined mix of Sanskrit and Bengali, making it a literary masterpiece.

Role in Freedom Movement

During India’s independence struggle, ‘Vande Mataram’ emerged as a rousing slogan, inspiring countless freedom fighters. Its significance led to its adoption as the National Song of India, while ‘Jana Gana Mana’ was chosen as the national anthem.

Controversies and Historical Context

PM Modi also referenced past controversies surrounding the song. He criticized the Congress party for allegedly omitting essential lines during its 1937 Faizabad session, a decision Congress claims was advised by Rabindranath Tagore to respect sentiments of different communities.

By highlighting the historical and cultural importance of ‘Vande Mataram’, the Prime Minister emphasized its enduring relevance in modern India, reminding citizens of the song’s legacy as a symbol of national pride and unity.
