During his historic visit to Ethiopia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Ethiopian Parliament with a clear message: the world cannot progress if its systems remain trapped in the past. Emphasizing the vision of a united and forward-looking “Global South,” PM Modi highlighted the need for collaboration, inclusivity, and shared development.
A Strong Message to the World
PM Modi stated that nations of the Global South are now writing their own destinies. India and Ethiopia envision a world where developing countries do not act against one another but work together to advance collective progress. He stressed the need for reforms in global institutions like the United Nations Security Council and called for a world where development is equitable, technology is accessible, and sovereignty is respected.
“The world must make decisions that reflect today’s realities, not the world of 1945,” PM Modi said. “Global systems cannot move forward if they remain stuck in the past.” He highlighted India’s push for a Global Development Agreement, focusing on technology sharing, affordable finance, capacity building, and trade to support sustainable growth.
Ethiopia: A Key Partner in Development
PM Modi recalled that during the recent G20 Summit in November, he launched the Africa Skills Multiplier Initiative, aimed at training one million instructors. This initiative will enhance local capacities and support Ethiopia’s inclusive and sustainable development efforts.
India and Ethiopia: Partners in the Global South
PM Modi emphasized that as vibrant and diverse democracies, both nations understand that democracy is a journey shaped by dialogue, debate, and adherence to the rule of law. Highlighting India’s solidarity with Ethiopia, he cited a local proverb: “When spider webs unite, they can tie up a lion.” In India, he noted, “When hearts unite, even mountains give way.”
Unity and Cooperation as Strength
“Unity is strength, and collaboration is power,” PM Modi said. He called for the nations of the Global South, with their ancient civilizations and shared friendship, to work together as a global family to create a fairer, more equitable, and peaceful world.
Strengthening India-Africa Relations
PM Modi highlighted India’s growing ties with Africa, celebrating Ethiopia’s inclusion as a full BRICS member and the African Union’s recognition as a permanent member in G20. Over the past 11 years, India has deepened its engagement with Africa, conducting over 100 high-level exchanges between heads of state and government.
Joint Initiatives for a Sustainable Future
Both countries agreed to work together on renewable energy, green jobs, resilient infrastructure, and biofuels, with a shared commitment to climate justice. PM Modi affirmed India’s support for Ethiopia’s efforts to amplify the voice of the Global South at COP-32 in 2027.
