New Delhi: On the eighth day of the Winter Session of Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the Lok Sabha on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of India’s national song, Vande Mataram. He described the discussion on the song as a moment of pride for the nation and highlighted its role as a source of inspiration during India’s struggle for independence.
Prime Minister Modi said, “We have chosen this moment for a collective discussion to remember the mantra that energized the freedom movement, showing the path of sacrifice and perseverance. It is a matter of pride for all of us to witness and honor this legacy today.”
Referring to the historical context, PM Modi recalled the British strategy of ‘divide and rule,’ noting that Bengal was made a testing ground due to its intellectual and cultural strength. He said, “The British understood that Bengal’s intellectual prowess could influence the entire nation. That is why they attempted to divide Bengal in 1905, believing that splitting Bengal would weaken India. But Vande Mataram stood like a rock, rallying the people of Bengal. It became the clarion call for unity and inspired countless citizens.”
The Prime Minister further emphasized the unique global significance of Vande Mataram. He stated, “We should be proud that history has never witnessed a patriotic song capable of inspiring millions for generations toward a single goal. Even during the darkest periods of slavery, such powerful songs emerged from our land—this is a marvel for the world to recognize.”
PM Modi’s speech underlined not just the historical importance of Vande Mataram, but also its enduring role as a symbol of unity, resilience, and national pride.
