New Delhi: As the results of Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections become increasingly clear, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)-led alliance has emerged with a decisive majority, paving the way for BNP chief Tarique Rahman—son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia—to likely become the country’s next Prime Minister.
In a significant diplomatic development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his heartfelt congratulations to Tarique Rahman on the party’s sweeping victory.
PM Modi’s Message of Congratulations
Taking to social media, PM Modi praised the BNP’s strong performance and described the victory as a reflection of the Bangladeshi people’s faith in Rahman’s leadership.
In his message, Modi stated:
“Heartiest congratulations to Mr Tarique Rahman for leading BNP to a major victory in Bangladesh’s parliamentary elections. This win reflects the trust of the people of Bangladesh in your leadership. India will continue to stand by a democratic, progressive and inclusive Bangladesh. I look forward to working with you to strengthen our multifaceted ties and advance our shared development goals.”
BNP Claims Majority in 300-Seat Parliament
According to reports, the BNP has already crossed the crucial mark of 151 seats in the 300-member parliament, making it nearly certain that the party will form the next government.
The election comes after a period of political transition in Bangladesh. The interim administration, which took charge following the removal of the Awami League government in August 2024, is expected to hand over power to the newly elected leadership.
Interim Government Led by Muhammad Yunus
For the past 18 months, Bangladesh has been governed by an interim setup headed by Muhammad Yunus. The latest elections were conducted alongside a national referendum on a complex 84-point reform package, widely referred to as the “July National Charter.”
A Direct Contest Between BNP and Jamaat
With former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League absent from the electoral battlefield, the election was largely seen as a direct contest between the BNP and its former ally, Jamaat-e-Islami.
Bangladesh May Get First Male PM in 36 Years
Earlier, the BNP had announced that if it secured victory, Tarique Rahman would be appointed as the next Prime Minister. If confirmed, Rahman would become Bangladesh’s first male Prime Minister in the last 36 years, marking a historic shift in the country’s political leadership.
The election outcome is expected to redefine Bangladesh’s domestic politics and may also open a new chapter in India-Bangladesh relations, with both nations looking to strengthen cooperation and advance shared regional development goals.
