Pakistan to Relaunch Its Own Indigenous App ‘BEEP’, Inspired by China’s WeChat

Pakistan is set to relaunch its own mobile app designed exclusively for government employees, offering secure communication with end-to-end encryption. The app, named ‘BEEP Pakistan’, draws inspiration from China’s popular messaging platform WeChat, prompting comparisons to the Chinese model.

According to reports presented to the National Assembly’s IT and Telecom Committee, the app is nearly complete and is expected to go live within the next few months, with the official project deadline set for 30 June 2026.

Entirely Developed in Pakistan
The National Information Technology Board (NITB) confirmed that BEEP is fully developed in Pakistan and has received approvals from government agencies. The app will initially be rolled out in federal ministries and departments, integrating with Pakistan’s e-Office system to facilitate secure messaging and document sharing among officials.

End-to-End Encryption for Messages and Calls
BEEP features end-to-end encryption for both messages and video calls, ensuring conversations remain secure. Committee members raised concerns over data safety, given vulnerabilities in other global platforms. NITB Chief Faisal Iqbal Ratyal stated that extra security features have been incorporated, and unlike WhatsApp servers, which are located outside Pakistan, BEEP’s servers will be hosted within the country, providing enhanced data protection. The app has also been approved by Pakistan’s National Computer Emergency Response Team (PakCERT).

Usage Fee to Be Charged
The app will charge a fee based on usage, with the long-term goal of becoming self-sustaining. IT officials emphasized that the primary objective is secure and efficient communication, not profit generation. By integrating with the e-Office system, BEEP aims to reduce paperwork, improve transparency, and enhance efficiency for government employees.

With its localized servers and enhanced security, BEEP is expected to provide a safer and more reliable alternative to foreign messaging platforms currently used by Pakistani officials.
