Over 75,000 Cases Disposed by Supreme Court in 2025, US and UK Can Barely Imagine

New Delhi: Despite having a limited number of judges, India’s Supreme Court resolved over 75,000 cases in 2025, setting a benchmark for judiciaries worldwide. Comparatively, the United States and the United Kingdom handle far fewer cases at their highest courts, making India’s achievement even more remarkable.

A Massive Undertaking Despite Few Judges
While India’s population is vast, the ratio of judges to citizens is among the lowest globally. For every 10 lakh people, India has only 21 judges, compared with 150 judges per 10 lakh people in the U.S. The Supreme Court currently has 34 sanctioned judges, meaning roughly one judge per 4.5 crore people, highlighting the immense workload shouldered by India’s judiciary.

Mediation Suggested as a Solution
At the national conference “Exploring the Efficiency and Reach of Mediation”, India’s Solicitor General Tushar Mehta emphasized that mediation could ease the burden of rising litigation. Mediation allows parties to reach mutual agreements rather than engage in prolonged courtroom battles, a sentiment echoed by many legal experts aiming to streamline the justice system.

India Outpaces US and UK
By comparison, the U.S. Supreme Court receives thousands of petitions annually but only hears 70–80 cases, while the UK Supreme Court processed just around 50 cases out of 200 filings in 2025. In contrast, India’s Supreme Court delivered 1,400 major judgments along with thousands of other orders, underscoring its remarkable efficiency.

The Need to Increase Judges
Former Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud has previously emphasized the urgent need to expand judicial strength at all levels. With the current judge-to-population ratio, India’s Supreme Court continues to handle an extraordinary caseload, setting an example for the global judiciary.

India’s judicial achievement in 2025 highlights both the efficiency and resilience of its legal system and underscores the need for reforms and increased judicial capacity to meet the demands of a growing population.
