New Delhi, January 26, 2026: Maulana Sajad Rashidi, President of the All India Imam Association, has expressed his support for AIMIM leader Waris Pathan’s controversial remarks about turning Maharashtra and the country “green.” Speaking to IANS, Maulana Rashidi questioned why criticism arises over the green color while saffron-colored political statements face no action.
“If a political party wants to expand, what is wrong with it? What is the harm in Waris Pathan talking about green? Those who talk about bringing Ram or waving saffron flags face no action. So why is there an issue when someone talks about making Mumbai or the country green?” he asked.
Green is Not an Islamic Color, Says Rashidi
Maulana Rashidi emphasized that green is not exclusively an Islamic color and lamented attempts to link it to Islam to tarnish the community’s image. He also expressed concern over the new UGC regulations, stating that such laws could be misused and innocent students may get implicated. “The way these laws are framed, even innocent people can get trapped. The government should ensure that the right authority enforces such regulations,” he said. He further noted that these developments could also impact the BJP’s core vote bank.
Comments on Shankaracharya Controversy
Regarding the resignation of an official over alleged disrespect to Shankaracharya, Rashidi said, “If the officer resigned due to Shankaracharya, I think it was wrong. Shankaracharya has always opposed the ruling establishment. While some police actions against certain saints were incorrect, giving a resignation over this is not justified.”
On Republic Day and Muslim Votes
On the occasion of Republic Day, Rashidi praised the country’s progress while acknowledging isolated incidents of communal hatred. He also criticized the Congress party, saying, “I don’t understand why Congress claims Muslims are angry with the BJP. Muslims have the constitutional right to vote for any party. Many Muslims, unhappy with Congress, are now voting for parties like the Samajwadi Party, AAP, or RJD. Even BJP is receiving 10–12 percent Muslim votes.” He added that Congress now limits itself to rhetoric, and that real engagement requires active efforts on the ground.
“Muslims are free to vote according to their choice. They have options, and they may even vote for the BJP,” he concluded.
