Nivrah Foundation Launches Nationwide ‘Digital Media Awareness & Legal Compliance Campaign 2025’


New Delhi, 15 Nov 2025 – In a first-of-its-kind initiative in India, the Nivrah Foundation has announced a comprehensive national campaign, “Digital Media Awareness & Legal Compliance Campaign – 2025”, targeting digital media professionals, journalists, YouTubers, social media creators, and online news publishers.

The campaign will be implemented nationwide under the leadership of Shri Vinayak Ashok Luniya, National President of Nivrah Foundation and Chairman of its Digital Media Self-Regulatory Body.


Objective of the Campaign

The campaign aims to make the digital media sector legally secure, transparent, and responsible. Key highlights include guidance on:

  • Digital Media Act 2021
  • IT Act 2000 & IT Rules 2021
  • New Indian Justice Code (BNS)

Participants will gain in-depth knowledge of their legal obligations while creating digital content. Additionally, specialized stress management and counseling programs have been introduced to support journalists and their families’ mental well-being.


Government Collaboration

The Nivrah Foundation is working closely with the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) – Digital Media Department to guide digital media houses across the country to operate in compliance with Indian laws.


Key Laws Applicable to Digital Media

  1. Fake News / Misinformation – IT Act 66D, IT Rules 2021, BNS 336/337
    Penalty: Up to 3 years imprisonment, ₹1 lakh fine, channel/portal blocking
  2. Defamation – BNS 499/500
    Penalty: 2 years imprisonment + monetary fine
  3. Hurt Religious Sentiments – BNS 295A, IT Act 67/67A
    Penalty: 3–5 years imprisonment
  4. Obscene / Violent Content – IT Act 67, 67A
    Penalty: 5–7 years imprisonment + heavy fine
  5. Cyber Bullying / Threats – IT Act 66E
    Penalty: 3 years imprisonment
  6. Privacy Violation – IT Act 43A/72
    Penalty: 3 years imprisonment + monetary fine
  7. Copyright Violation – Copyright Act
    Penalty: 6 months–3 years imprisonment + fine
  8. Running Unregistered News Portals – IT Rules 2021
    Action: Portal block + FIR
  9. False Advertising – Consumer Protection Act
    Fine: ₹10–50 lakh
  10. Public Order Violations / Fake News – BNS 153A/505
    Penalty: Life imprisonment in severe cases

Critical Government Authority – Section 69A, IT Act

If content is deemed anti-national, fake, obscene, or disruptive to public order, the government can:

  • Block websites or YouTube channels
  • Shut down servers
  • File FIRs against editors/publishers
  • Arrest responsible individuals
