Nicolas Maduro, the President of Venezuela, is currently in U.S. custody, having been apprehended by U.S. soldiers and brought to America. But beyond his political career, Maduro has an intriguing and lesser-known connection to Hinduism. Let’s take a look at how the Venezuelan leader’s beliefs align with Hindu traditions.
Maduro’s Visible Affiliation with Hinduism
Maduro is often seen wearing a kalawa (sacred thread) on his wrist, a symbol of Hindu spirituality. Additionally, he has been frequently spotted wearing a watch featuring the image of Lord Ganesha, the Hindu deity of wisdom and remover of obstacles. During his presidency, on Venezuela’s National Day, invitation cards were printed with the Hindu symbol ‘Om’ (ॐ), further emphasizing his connection to the faith. Furthermore, Maduro has shown admiration for Sathya Sai Baba, a renowned Indian spiritual leader.
Maduro’s Religious Background and Conversion
Although Maduro was born into a Catholic family and raised as a Christian, his connection to Hinduism deepened after he married Cilia Flores. Through her influence, Maduro became a devoted follower of Sathya Sai Baba. This conversion to Hinduism is significant, especially given his Christian upbringing.
Before their marriage, Cilia Flores took Maduro to India in 2005, where he met Sai Baba. At the time, Flores was a lawyer for former President Hugo Chávez, while Maduro was the Speaker of the Venezuelan Assembly. Flores introduced him to the spiritual teachings of Sai Baba, and since then, Maduro has developed a deep reverence for the guru.
A Personal Connection to Sai Baba
In photos from their trip to India, Maduro and Flores are seen sitting at the feet of Sai Baba, having had a private audience with him. Back in Caracas, in the Presidential Palace, Maduro’s private office is adorned with a large framed picture of Sai Baba, alongside images of Venezuelan revolutionary figures such as Simon Bolívar and Hugo Chávez.
Maduro and His Spiritual Journey
This unique intersection of faiths in the life of a prominent political leader highlights a fascinating side of Maduro’s personal beliefs, which goes beyond his role in global politics. His devotion to Hinduism, particularly to the teachings of Sathya Sai Baba, offers a glimpse into the spiritual practices that shape his worldview.
