NHAI Launches Nationwide Highway Audit, Sends 60 Officers for Surprise Inspections

In a pioneering move, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has, for the first time, deployed 60 officers from its headquarters across the country to conduct surprise audits of highways. The officers will assess road quality, operational standards, and the convenience provided to the public. Observations and deficiencies will be recorded directly on the NHAI One app to ensure a real-time understanding of ground conditions.

Direct Insights from the Ground
The initiative aims to bridge the gap between field reports and actual road conditions. Officers will evaluate the highways for aspects such as road safety, smoothness, aesthetics, and user convenience. By documenting findings directly on the app, NHAI ensures that insights are based on first-hand observations rather than filtered through field units.

Ensuring Quality and Accountability
NHAI has emphasized that maintenance standards had already been communicated to all field units well in advance. This audit leaves no room for excuses regarding lapses in road quality. The authority’s goal is to enhance highway safety, smoothness, and traveler satisfaction through stringent monitoring and accountability.

Use of Network Survey Vehicles
To support the audit, NHAI has deployed Network Survey Vehicles (NSVs) to detect deficiencies on highways. Data collected by these vehicles is shared with field officers and contractors, who are required to submit Action Taken Reports (ATRs). Officers conducting the inspections will verify the accuracy and effectiveness of these ATRs to ensure corrective measures are properly implemented.

Strict Independence During Inspections
During the audits, contractors and concessionaire staff are strictly prohibited from influencing the inspection process. Each officer is required to submit a detailed report post-inspection, reinforcing transparency and ensuring that highway operations meet national standards.

With this initiative, NHAI aims to set a benchmark in highway management, ensuring safer, smoother, and more reliable travel for citizens across the nation.
