New Delhi: The Indian Navy is set to significantly enhance its maritime combat capabilities with the induction of its second MH‑60R multi‑role helicopter squadron. The new squadron, INAS 335, christened “Ospreys,” will be commissioned on December 17 at INS Hansa, Goa.
Manufactured by US defence major Lockheed Martin, the MH‑60R helicopters are among the world’s most advanced naval aviation platforms. Designed primarily for anti‑submarine warfare (ASW), these helicopters are capable of detecting, tracking, and neutralising enemy submarines in a single swift operation. They will be deployed onboard frontline Indian Navy warships, dramatically strengthening fleet defence and strike capabilities.
Equipped with state‑of‑the‑art sensors, weapons systems, and advanced avionics, the MH‑60R is a true force multiplier. Beyond anti‑submarine missions, the helicopters can perform maritime surveillance, surface warfare, search and rescue, and multi‑role combat operations, making them indispensable for modern naval warfare.
The induction of INAS 335 follows the commissioning of the first MH‑60R squadron, INAS 334 “Seahawks,” which was inducted at INS Garuda, Kochi, in March last year. Together, the two squadrons mark a major leap in India’s naval aviation strength.
₹15,157‑Crore Defence Deal
India approved the purchase of 24 MH‑60R helicopters in August 2018, culminating in a ₹15,157‑crore defence deal with the United States in February 2020. The helicopters have also been integrated with India’s indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, enhancing carrier‑borne anti‑submarine and surveillance operations.
Last month, India and the US signed an additional ₹7,995‑crore contract covering maintenance, spare parts, training, technical support, and the establishment of intermediate‑level repair and inspection facilities in India, further boosting self‑reliance in defence sustainment.
In October 2024, the US approved the sale of 53 air‑launched MK‑54 lightweight torpedoes for the MH‑60R fleet. With a strike range of nearly 10 kilometres, these torpedoes significantly enhance the helicopter’s submarine‑killing capability.
A Major Strategic Boost
Capable of seamless integration with the Navy’s existing fleet, the MH‑60R helicopters represent a decisive upgrade in India’s ability to counter undersea threats and secure its vast maritime interests. Their induction underscores India’s growing naval strength and commitment to maintaining dominance across the Indian Ocean Region.
