New Delhi: A notice submitted by 119 Opposition Members of Parliament, led by the Congress, seeking to move a motion for the removal of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, has reportedly been found riddled with serious procedural and factual errors, raising sharp questions about the Opposition’s preparation and the seriousness of the move.
According to reports, the notice contained multiple inaccuracies, including repeated references to events dated February 2025, despite the motion being submitted during the 2026 Budget Session. The presence of such glaring mistakes has triggered speculation over whether the MPs signed the notice without thoroughly reviewing its contents.
Notice May Be Rejected Under Parliamentary Rules
As per an ANI report, the notice reportedly mentions February 2025 events as many as four times, which could make it vulnerable to rejection under parliamentary procedure. Sources indicated that such errors could be considered significant enough to render the notice invalid, depending on the interpretation of House rules.
The development has fueled criticism, with observers questioning whether the Opposition has fully understood the gravity and sensitivity involved in initiating a removal process against the Speaker of the Lok Sabha — one of the highest constitutional offices in the country.
Speaker Directs Secretariat to Rectify Errors
However, it has been reported that Speaker Om Birla has instructed the Lok Sabha Secretariat to get the errors corrected and proceed with the process as per established rules. He has directed officials to ensure that the matter is handled swiftly and in accordance with parliamentary norms.
Sources in the Lok Sabha Secretariat said that once a corrected notice is received, it will be examined promptly and processed as per procedure. The motion is expected to be listed only after the completion of the second phase of the Budget Session.
Notice Already Corrected Once
Notably, the notice had reportedly contained errors even at the time of submission. Initially, it mentioned the year 2025 instead of 2026, which was later corrected. However, further scrutiny has now revealed additional mistakes, including incorrect references to last year’s dates and events.
Prominent Opposition Leaders Among Signatories
The notice has been signed by several prominent Opposition leaders, making the errors even more striking. Among the signatories are K.C. Venugopal, T.R. Baalu, Gaurav Gogoi, Dharmendra Yadav, Dimple Yadav, Aditya Yadav, Kumari Selja, Shashi Tharoor, Akshay Yadav, Misa Bharti, and Tariq Anwar, among others.
The incident has sparked political debate, with the ruling side likely to use the errors to question the credibility and intent of the Opposition’s attempt to initiate proceedings against the Speaker.
