
Mumbai: French President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Mumbai on Tuesday morning for a three-day visit to India. During his trip, several agreements were signed between India and France, reflecting deepening ties in technology, defense, and trade. President Macron is also scheduled to participate in the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi.
Strengthening Bilateral Cooperation
At a press conference in Mumbai, Indian Ambassador to France Sanjeev Kumar Singla highlighted the key agreements. “We have decided to establish a Joint Advanced Technology Development Group focused on critical and emerging technologies. In addition, both countries issued a joint declaration of intent to cooperate in critical minerals. There is also a Letter of Intent between India’s Department of Science & Technology and France’s CNRS, one of the world’s largest scientific institutions, to create a centre for advanced materials research. Furthermore, amendments to the Double Tax Avoidance Agreement have been signed,” he said.
A Jogging President Inspires Young People
The Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal commented on President Macron’s public jogging session on Mumbai’s Marine Drive, saying, “Mumbai hosts several marathons, and this public display of health consciousness sends a positive message to youth, both in India and globally. We should take inspiration from this gesture during his visit.”
High-Level Talks with Prime Minister Modi
Earlier on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi held extensive discussions with President Macron to strengthen bilateral relations in trade, defense, energy, and advanced technology sectors.
Context: Major Defense Deal
President Macron’s visit comes days after India approved the purchase of 114 Rafale fighter jets from France, one of the largest defense deals in recent years. Strengthening defense collaboration and expanding ties in critical technologies are considered priority areas for both countries.
Prime Minister Modi also welcomed Macron on social media, writing, “Welcome to India! We are excited about your visit and about taking our bilateral relations to new heights. I am confident our discussions will further strengthen cooperation in multiple areas and contribute to global progress. My dear friend Emmanuel Macron, see you in Mumbai and then in Delhi.”
