Lalit Modi and Vijay Mallya Share Tongue-in-Cheek Video, Call Themselves ‘India’s Biggest Fugitives’

In a daring move, fugitive Indian businessman Lalit Modi has shared a video mocking India, featuring fellow absconding businessman Vijay Mallya at his birthday party. In the clip, Modi refers to himself and Mallya as “the two biggest fugitives of India.”

Lalit Modi, one of the founders of the Indian Premier League (IPL), recorded the video from London. In it, he says, “We are two fugitives, India’s biggest fugitives.” Accompanying the post on his Instagram, Modi wrote: “Let me do something again to break the internet. Here’s something for you. Burn your hearts.”

The video has sparked strong reactions on social media. One user commented that Modi and Mallya are mocking the Indian government, while another dismissed Modi’s claim of “breaking the internet.” Several users criticized Indian authorities, with one remarking that it is shameful that such a video could even be made, and another noting the duo’s apparent derision of the CBI and Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Mallya in the UK Since 2016
Vijay Mallya, who has been residing in the UK since 2016, is currently under scrutiny by the Bombay High Court. The court has asked Mallya when he intends to return to India. It directed his lawyers that the hearing of the petition under the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act cannot proceed until he appears within the court’s jurisdiction. Mallya has filed two petitions in the High Court: one challenging the order declaring him a fugitive economic offender, and another questioning the constitutional validity of the 2018 Act.
