Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration has taken stern action against students who raised provocative slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah during a protest at the university on Monday night. An FIR has been registered, and disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against the students involved.
The protest, organized by the student union on the JNU campus, saw slogans that were deemed “highly objectionable and provocative” by the university administration. These slogans targeted constitutional authorities, and the administration expressed serious concern over the disrespect shown towards the institutions of the country.
JNU released a statement on its social media platforms, condemning the slogans as “deliberate disrespect” for constitutional institutions. The university administration also urged the Delhi Police to file an FIR and take appropriate legal action against those responsible for the incident.
The event, named “Resistance Night with Gurilla Dhaba,” was initially thought to be a tribute to an incident that occurred on January 5, 2020, and attended by 30 to 35 students. However, following judicial decisions related to the bail pleas of Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, the nature of the event changed, and some participants reportedly raised provocative slogans.
The university’s Registrar issued a statement calling the actions of the students “deliberate disrespect for constitutional institutions and a violation of established norms of democratic discourse.” The administration also emphasized the importance of distinguishing between disagreement, offensive remarks, and hateful speech, urging all stakeholders to avoid engaging in any unnecessary activities that might disturb peace and harmony on campus.
In its letter to the Vasant Kunj (North) police station, JNU highlighted that the slogans raised during the event were “extremely objectionable and provocative,” and that they directly amounted to contempt of the Supreme Court. The administration expressed concern that such actions could severely affect public order, campus harmony, and the security environment of both the university and the nation.
A video of the incident, which has gone viral, shows JNU Student Union (JNUSU) members chanting these slogans during the protest. The university specifically named JNUSU President Aditi Mishra and other students involved in the incident. According to the university, security personnel were present on-site and kept a watch on the situation.
The letter also mentioned that the Chief Security Officer had requested the police to file an FIR under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and collaborate with the security branch for further investigation.
This incident has raised serious concerns about the nature of protests on campus, with the administration reiterating that such slogans are in direct opposition to democratic dissent and violate the JNU Code of Conduct. The university has warned that any further disturbances will result in stringent actions as per the rules.
