Northern India continues to reel under biting cold, dense fog, and an intense cold wave. Residents of Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, and Odisha are unlikely to see relief from the chill over the next 2–3 days, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Delhi-NCR Cold Continues
Delhi-NCR will experience another cold day on January 17, with minimum temperatures around 6°C and maximum around 23°C. Moderate fog is expected in the morning and evening, though no specific weather warnings have been issued. On January 18, temperatures are expected to remain between 7°C and 23°C, with fog persisting.
Cold Wave Alerts Across North India
The IMD has issued alerts ranging from cold wave to severe cold wave for several states. Northern India remains under the influence of a western disturbance, which is likely to bring light to moderate rainfall and snowfall in Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand between January 17 and 21. Scattered rain is also possible in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, eastern Rajasthan, and western Uttar Pradesh during January 18–20.
Impact on Plains and Hills
In Uttar Pradesh, cold conditions have intensified again after a brief sunny spell. Some parts of the state may see rainfall on January 19–20, which could further aggravate the chill. In Uttarakhand, districts such as Chamoli and Uttarkashi may witness light rainfall, with snowfall expected in higher-altitude areas. Western disturbances are likely to maintain cold winds in the plains of Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar.
Jammu & Kashmir is experiencing severe cold, with water bodies like Dal Lake partially frozen. A western disturbance approaching the region from January 17 is expected to influence valley weather. In Rajasthan, dense fog and cold wave conditions continue, though a weak western disturbance could cause partial cloud cover in northern and western areas on January 17–18. This may slightly raise minimum temperatures by 2–3°C, offering brief relief from the chill.
