New Delhi: In a heartwarming display of sports diplomacy, Indian External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar exchanged cricket memorabilia with his Japanese counterpart, Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, during the latter’s visit to India on Friday.
Jaishankar presented Motegi, an avid cricket fan, with a bat signed by the Indian cricket team. In return, Motegi gifted Jaishankar the official jersey of the Japanese national cricket team, highlighting their shared passion for the sport.
Sharing pictures from the meeting on his social media account X, Jaishankar wrote that he was delighted to welcome Foreign Minister Motegi to India and was even more thrilled to discover a fellow cricket enthusiast. “In the spirit of our shared love for the game, I feel honored to receive the national cricket team jersey of Japan,” he added. “I also presented him with a bat signed by the Indian cricket team.”
Motegi is on a two-day official visit to India from January 15 to 17. On January 16, he met Jaishankar at Hyderabad House, and on January 17, he is scheduled to pay floral tributes at Raj Ghat and visit the Delhi Metro before departing. This meeting follows an earlier encounter between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi at the G20 Summit in Johannesburg earlier this year.
The exchange of cricket memorabilia serves as a symbolic gesture, blending diplomacy with a shared passion for sport, reflecting the warmth and camaraderie between India and Japan.
