New Delhi, January 7, 2026: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar launched a pointed critique of Western nations’ approach toward India and South Asia during a meeting with the Indian community in Luxembourg. Speaking on the backdrop of Operation Sindoor, Jaishankar accused Western countries of double standards and hypocrisy.
The minister highlighted that when violence occurs within Western countries, India does not intervene or comment, yet during India’s retaliatory measures against Pakistan under Operation Sindoor, several Western nations were quick to offer unsolicited advice and express concern.
“Often Driven by Self-Interest”
Addressing the gathering, Jaishankar said, “Countries far removed from South Asia often comment on sensitive issues without fully understanding the ground realities. Sometimes they speak wisely, sometimes unwisely, sometimes out of self-interest, and sometimes carelessly.”
Questioning Western Standards
Jaishankar questioned why Western nations do not acknowledge or reflect on the violence and security challenges within their own borders. “They raise concerns about India, yet what about the steps they themselves take, or the risks in their regions? How often has India commented on their actions?” he asked.
India’s Independent Path
The minister emphasized that India must recognize these realities and continue to pursue its policies without being influenced by external powers. Criticizing the Western narrative, he said, “Why don’t you look at your own region, assess the level of violence, the risks taken, and the actions being implemented? How much concern have we expressed about these?”
Jaishankar’s remarks underline India’s stance on defending its sovereignty and challenging perceived double standards in international diplomacy, particularly when it comes to sensitive security operations.
