ISRO’s ‘Bahubali’ Mission: Five Key Highlights That Have Captured Global Attention

New Delhi:
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to achieve another major milestone with its upcoming LVM3-M6 mission, scheduled for launch on December 24. Under this mission, ISRO will deploy the BlueBird Block-2 satellite into orbit as part of a commercial agreement with the US-based company AST SpaceMobile. The mission is being closely watched worldwide due to its technological significance and strategic impact.

Popularly known as ‘Bahubali’ for its extraordinary heavy-lift capability, the LVM3 rocket will carry one of the heaviest communication satellites ever launched by India, weighing 4,410 kilograms. Here are five key highlights that make this mission historic:

1. Next-Generation Communication Satellite

The BlueBird Block-2 satellite represents the next generation of communication technology. It is designed to deliver high-speed cellular broadband directly to smartphones, even in remote and underserved regions. AST SpaceMobile is developing the world’s first and only space-based cellular broadband network, accessible without special hardware, catering to both commercial and government users.

2. Secure Multi-Band Connectivity Across Strategic Regions

The mission aims to enhance secure, multi-band communication services across India’s landmass, maritime zones, and strategically sensitive areas. With this launch, India further strengthens its ability to independently deploy large and heavy satellites, reinforcing its position among the world’s leading spacefaring nations.

3. Advanced Cryogenic Technology

The LVM3 is a three-stage launch vehicle that uses solid, liquid, and advanced cryogenic propulsion systems. A major highlight of this mission is the re-ignition of the cryogenic stage, a critical capability that will enable more complex, flexible, and long-duration space missions in the future.

4. Symbol of India’s Growing Space Power and Self-Reliance

The rocket’s nickname, ‘Bahubali’, symbolizes immense strength and power, inspired by Indian mythology. It reflects India’s growing technological prowess, self-reliance, and confidence in handling high-end space missions without dependence on foreign launch systems.

5. Bridging the Connectivity Gap for Billions

AST SpaceMobile has stated that its mission is to address connectivity challenges faced by nearly six billion mobile users worldwide, including billions who still lack access to the internet. In September 2024, the company successfully launched five BlueBird satellites, enabling continuous coverage in parts of the United States and select countries.
The upcoming BlueBird Block-2 launch will further strengthen this network, offering 24/7 global cellular broadband directly to smartphones.

The mission is a dedicated commercial launch executed under an agreement between NewSpace India Limited (NSIL)—ISRO’s commercial arm based in Bengaluru—and AST SpaceMobile (AST & Science LLC). The BlueBird Block-2 satellite will be part of a global Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellation, aimed at revolutionizing mobile connectivity through satellite-based direct-to-device communication.

With this mission, ISRO once again demonstrates India’s ability to deliver world-class space solutions, strengthening its role as a key player in the rapidly evolving global space economy.
