Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi Likely to Visit India Amid Violent Protests

Amid ongoing violent protests in Iran demanding a change in leadership, Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi is reportedly planning a visit to India next week. Considering the rapidly shifting dynamics in geopolitics, this trip has gained significant strategic importance.

Sources indicate that Araghchi may visit Delhi on January 15–16. This would be his second visit to India, his first being in May 2025 during Operation Sindur. However, given the current volatile political and diplomatic situation in West Asia, the timing of his visit amid government-opposition clashes adds a new dimension to the trip.

Agenda of the Visit

Details of the visit are yet to be finalized. However, sources familiar with the discussions—speaking on condition of anonymity—say that the key agenda is likely to include enhancing cooperation on Chabahar Port, regional connectivity, trade, regional development, and supporting the peace process in Gaza.

Strategic Importance of Chabahar Port

The Chabahar Port, a strategic asset on the Arabian Sea, has become even more critical for India-Iran cooperation. The Trump administration had granted India a six-month waiver in October 2025 from sanctions on Chabahar Port, allowing both countries to continue developing the port as a strategic platform. Previously, in 2018, Washington had withdrawn similar relief. Besides bilateral trade, Chabahar has also emerged as a key transit point for goods coming from Afghanistan after Pakistan closed the traditional transit route.

Significance Amid Protests

Araghchi’s visit may also provide an opportunity for Iran to brief India on the ongoing violent protests aimed at toppling the government. Economic grievances in Iran have led to widespread unrest, impacting Tehran and several other cities. At least 35 people, including security personnel, have reportedly died in the violence. The protests have escalated geopolitical tensions, especially as former U.S. President Donald Trump had warned that the U.S. is “fully prepared to intervene” if peaceful protesters are harmed.

India’s Role on the Global Stage

India is set to host the BRICS Summit later this year, which may also see the visit of Iranian President Masoud Pejmanian. Iran has acknowledged India’s growing role not only as a global power but also as a key voice for the Global South. Observers note that India can play a constructive role in promoting peace and stability in regions including Gaza. Araghchi’s visit is therefore being viewed not just through a bilateral lens but also in the context of India’s expanding influence on global affairs.
