Inside Putin’s Red Diary: The Late Nights, Iron Discipline and 2-Hour Swim Routine That Keep Him ‘Unshakeably Fit’ at 73

New Delhi: Russian President Vladimir Putin, currently on an official visit to India, continues to fascinate people across the world with his energy and fitness even at the age of 73. A recent Esquire report and earlier findings by Newsweek reveal the carefully crafted lifestyle behind Putin’s tough, masculine public image — a routine that combines discipline, secrecy, and strict control.

Wakes Up Late, Eats a Power Breakfast

According to journalist Ben Judah’s 2014 book Fragile Empire: How Russia Fell in and Out of Love with Vladimir Putin, the Russian leader wakes up late and usually has breakfast around noon. His meals include a large omelette or porridge, quail eggs and fresh fruit juices — ingredients said to be sourced from the farmlands of Patriarch Kirill. Putin ends his breakfast with coffee before moving into his exercise schedule.

Two Hours of Swimming — Where He Thinks for Russia

Putin begins his fitness routine with nearly two hours of swimming. Judah notes that the president often does some of his “deepest thinking” while in the water, shaping plans and strategies. After swimming, he moves to the gym for weight training. Known for his conservative style choices, Putin prefers custom-tailored suits, Valentino ties and premium brands such as Kiton and Brioni.

Works Through Red Folders, Not Computers

Unlike most modern world leaders, Putin avoids heavy use of technology. During work hours, he relies on printed intelligence summaries stored in a red folder — often referred to as his “lifeline.” These folders contain reports from the FSB, SVR, FSO and international press digests. According to reports, Putin has recently demanded that briefings be no longer than three pages and typed in no less than 18-point font.
He rarely uses the internet and prefers Soviet-era fixed-line telephones.

A Strict Night Owl

Putin’s workday stretches late into the night. Newsweek reports that the Russian president feels mentally sharpest during night hours and often works till late. During foreign trips, his schedule becomes even tighter, with every detail — from bedsheets to toiletries — replaced for security reasons. He never eats food served by a host unless it has prior Kremlin approval.

Avoids Dairy While Travelling

Although his favourite dessert is pistachio ice cream — which he once gifted to Chinese President Xi Jinping at a G20 summit — Putin avoids dairy products during foreign visits as a precaution.

Almost No Alcohol

Except for official state occasions, Putin stays away from alcohol. Analysts say this is partly to project a political contrast to former President Boris Yeltsin and to highlight a sober, disciplined leadership image at a time when Russia struggles with alcoholism.

A Deep Love for Animals

Putin is also known for his affection for animals. His pets include Conni, a 15-year-old black Labrador; Yume, an Akita Inu; and Buffy, a Karakachan dog — all of whom have been seen in photographs and public events.

Conclusion:
Behind Putin’s tough global persona lies a life defined by routine, fitness, obsession with secrecy and a deep reliance on his famous red folder. His lifestyle choices — late-night working, strict diet, disciplined exercise and minimal technology use — continue to fuel global curiosity about one of the world’s most powerful leaders.
