INS Sudarshini Sets Sail on Global Voyage, to Visit 18 Ports Across 13 Countries

The Indian Navy’s sail training vessel INS Sudarshini has embarked on an ambitious 10-month-long global maritime voyage, covering nearly 22,000 nautical miles and visiting 18 ports across 13 countries. The expedition, named ‘Lokayan 26’, underscores India’s growing maritime outreach and naval diplomacy on the global stage.

The vessel was formally flagged off from the naval base in Kochi by Vice Admiral Sameer Saxena, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Southern Naval Command (SNC), marking the commencement of the long-distance sailing mission.

Symbol of India’s Maritime Aspirations

Describing the voyage as historic, a Navy spokesperson said the deployment represents a powerful symbol of India’s maritime endeavour and reflects the country’s increasing prominence in global maritime activities. INS Sudarshini had earlier participated in the Operational Demonstration held in Thiruvananthapuram in December last year as part of the Navy Day celebrations.

Naval Diplomacy and Global Engagement

Interacting with the crew, Vice Admiral Saxena highlighted the ship’s role as an “ambassador of India” during its overseas deployment. He said the voyage goes beyond oceans and borders, building “bridges of friendship” with nations across the world.

A traditional send-off ceremony marked the departure, with the three-masted sailing vessel unfurling its sails to the stirring tunes of the naval band, symbolising India’s rich maritime heritage.

Participation in Major International Maritime Events

During the 10-month deployment, INS Sudarshini will make its debut at ‘Escale à Sète’ in France, one of Europe’s premier maritime festivals, scheduled for March–April 2026. In the Mediterranean Sea, the ship will represent India alongside some of the world’s most renowned tall ships.

In July 2026, the vessel will also participate in the International Parade of Sails in New York as part of the 250th Independence Anniversary celebrations of the United States, joining a grand international fleet known as ‘Sail 250’.

Indigenously Built Training Ship

Constructed by Goa Shipyard Limited, INS Sudarshini is a 54-metre-long sail training ship of the Indian Navy. The vessel is equipped with 20 sails, covering a sail area of over 1,000 square metres, and plays a crucial role in training naval cadets in traditional seamanship and navigation skills.

The global voyage of INS Sudarshini under Lokayan 26 is expected to strengthen India’s naval diplomacy, promote maritime cooperation, and showcase the country’s enduring seafaring legacy to the world.
