New Delhi:
The Indian Army has introduced a significant change in its social media policy, allowing its personnel to access Instagram for the first time. However, the permission comes with strict limitations aimed at safeguarding operational security and preventing misuse.
Under the revised guidelines, soldiers and officers may use Instagram only in a “view-only” mode. This means they are permitted to watch content but are strictly prohibited from posting photos or videos, liking posts, commenting, sharing content, or engaging with other users in any form. Unlike regular users, Army personnel will not be allowed any interactive activity on the platform.
According to sources cited in media reports, the Army believes that limited access to Instagram will help personnel stay informed about online narratives, emerging trends, and potential security-related content. The Army has described this restricted access as “passive participation”, making it clear that viewing content is the sole purpose of the permission.
Another key objective behind the move is countering misinformation. With controlled access, soldiers can identify fake, misleading, or propaganda-driven posts and report them to senior officials, strengthening internal monitoring mechanisms.
Similar restrictions continue to apply to other social media platforms such as YouTube and X (formerly Twitter). These platforms are also permitted only for passive use, with no active engagement allowed, as per reports.
The Indian Army has consistently updated its social media guidelines over the years in response to evolving security challenges. Until 2019, personnel were not allowed to be part of any social media groups. Following several incidents of misuse, the rules were tightened further in 2020, when soldiers were instructed to delete 89 mobile applications due to security concerns.
Despite the strict framework, the Army allows limited and closely monitored use of select platforms including Facebook, YouTube, X, LinkedIn, Telegram, and WhatsApp. The latest decision to allow restricted Instagram access reflects the Army’s attempt to balance digital awareness with national security imperatives.
The move underscores the Indian Army’s cautious approach toward social media—embracing awareness and vigilance while maintaining uncompromising discipline and confidentiality.
