India-US Special Forces to Conduct ‘Vajra Prahar’ Exercise in Himachal Pradesh, Focus on Counter-Terror Operations

New Delhi: Despite fluctuations and political debates surrounding the India–United States trade agreement, defence cooperation between the two nations has remained steady. Reinforcing their strong military partnership, special forces of the Indian Army and the US Army are set to conduct a joint exercise titled ‘Vajra Prahar’ later this month in Himachal Pradesh.

The joint exercise will be held at Bakloh, a key special forces training hub in the state, from February 23 to March 16.

Objective: Strengthening Interoperability and Joint Mission Planning

The exercise is regarded as one of the most significant engagements between the elite forces of both countries. Its primary aim is to enhance interoperability in joint operations, exchange tactical expertise, and develop a better understanding of modern warfare techniques.

Initiated in 2010, ‘Vajra Prahar’ has been conducted alternately in India and the United States and has emerged as a crucial platform for strengthening strategic coordination between the two militaries. Unlike conventional military drills, this exercise exclusively involves elite commando units, focusing on advanced operational tactics and special mission execution.

Training Focus: Counter-Terrorism and Special Operations

Previous editions of ‘Vajra Prahar’ have included intensive training in counter-terrorism operations, airborne missions, para-drop drills, and warfare in challenging mountainous terrain.

The exercise has also featured long-range precision shooting training, waterborne infiltration tactics, and simulated rescue operations. Both conventional and unconventional warfare scenarios are recreated to ensure commandos can operate effectively under high-pressure conditions while maintaining seamless coordination.

Bakloh: A Key Centre for Special Forces Training

Bakloh, the chosen venue for the exercise, is considered one of India’s important centres for special forces training, particularly known for preparing troops for operations in rugged terrain and high-altitude environments.

According to defence officials, exercises like ‘Vajra Prahar’ are not limited to training alone. They are viewed as part of broader preparations for joint operational readiness in an increasingly complex global security environment.

The upcoming drill is expected to further deepen defence ties between India and the US and strengthen their shared focus on counter-terrorism and regional stability.
