India Unveils New ‘Bahubali’: World’s First 155mm/52-Caliber Artillery Gun Mounted on 4×4 Truck

New Delhi: Amid rising geopolitical tensions across multiple regions, India continues to modernize its military capabilities. In a major technological breakthrough, Kalyani Strategic Systems Limited (KSSL) has developed what is being described as the world’s first 155mm/52-caliber artillery gun mounted on a compact 4×4 truck platform — a development that could significantly enhance battlefield mobility and firepower.

The system combines the long-range striking capability of a heavy howitzer with the agility of a lightweight vehicle, a pairing previously considered structurally impractical in artillery engineering.

Engineering Breakthrough

The biggest challenge in mounting a high-caliber artillery system on a light 4×4 chassis lies in managing the enormous recoil forces generated during firing. Traditionally, guns of this class require heavier 6×6 or 8×8 platforms, or tracked vehicles, to maintain stability.

KSSL addressed this limitation by developing an advanced hybrid recoil system that absorbs a large portion of the firing energy. This innovation allows the artillery system to operate safely and steadily on a lighter chassis without compromising performance.

Engineers also relied heavily on advanced materials and digital design optimization to reduce weight while preserving structural strength.

Key Features of the New System

  • Built using high-strength aluminum instead of conventional steel to significantly reduce weight
  • Total system weight of approximately 24 tons — unusually light for its class
  • Automated ammunition handling system to reduce crew fatigue
  • Capable of firing up to five rounds per minute
  • Enhanced mobility and rapid deployment capability
  • Designed using digital engineering and advanced simulation testing

The combination of lightweight construction and automation positions the system as a competitive offering in the global defense market.

Upcoming Trials

The artillery gun is scheduled for live firing trials at the Balasore Field Firing Range in Odisha. These tests will evaluate accuracy, structural integrity, and recoil management under combat-like conditions. The results are expected to determine its readiness for operational deployment and potential induction into the Indian Army.

If successful, the platform could mark a new chapter in mobile artillery systems, providing India with faster deployment options and a tactical advantage in high-intensity conflict zones.
