
Japan has extended an invitation to 500 Indian AI professionals to work in the country, marking a significant step in strengthening bilateral cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence. The two nations have also agreed to establish a Japan-India AI Strategic Dialogue, aimed at accelerating joint research and fostering technological advancements in the coming years.
Following talks with Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Japanese Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu announced the invitation for Indian AI professionals and urged collaborative research initiatives. He also expressed Japan’s interest in contributing to the success of India’s upcoming “AI Impact Summit” in February. Minister Jaishankar welcomed the initiative, noting its potential to enhance India-Japan technological collaboration.
Regional and Global Cooperation
The ministers discussed broader regional issues, including developments in South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. They agreed on enhancing connectivity in India’s Northeast and surrounding regions through intellectual dialogue and initiatives such as the Japan-India Act East Forum. A framework was also established for policy dialogue on South Asia.
Both ministers exchanged views on responsible global governance, including cooperation within the World Trade Organization and reforms in the United Nations Security Council, reflecting a shared commitment to addressing international challenges.
Focus on Five Key Sectors for Economic Security
In economic security cooperation, India and Japan agreed to strengthen supply chains. The discussion emphasized five priority sectors identified during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Japan: semiconductors, critical minerals, information and communication technology, clean energy, and pharmaceuticals. To operationalize this collaboration, the two countries will launch the first Japan-India Private Sector Economic Security Dialogue (B2B) within the first quarter of 2026, followed by a Government-to-Government (G2G) dialogue at the sub-ministerial level.
75 Years of Diplomatic Ties
India and Japan will celebrate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027. Highlighting the enduring and strategic nature of the partnership, the ministers emphasized that bilateral cooperation continues to strengthen across economic, technological, and geopolitical domains. Minister Motegi noted that their discussions also reflect the broader Indo-Pacific convergence, building on conversations held with Prime Minister Modi.
