New Delhi:
The US Embassy in India on Tuesday shared a message from former President Donald Trump, praising India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Trump described India as home to one of the world’s oldest civilizations, calling it an extraordinary country and a key strategic partner of the US in the Indo-Pacific region. He referred to Prime Minister Modi as a great friend of the United States. The message was posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Context of the Message
This message comes shortly after a phone conversation between PM Modi and President Trump, in which they discussed strengthening cooperation in trade, critical technologies, energy, defense, and security. While both countries are negotiating a trade agreement, tensions have risen over US tariffs of 50% on Indian products.
India-Ethiopia Relations Strengthened
During his first official visit to Ethiopia, PM Modi announced a strategic partnership with the country. In Addis Ababa, following a bilateral meeting with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, Modi highlighted that the partnership would bring new energy, enthusiasm, and depth to bilateral relations. He was also awarded Ethiopia’s highest honor, the Great Honor of Ethiopia, for his visionary leadership and contribution to India-Ethiopia ties.
Seven agreements were signed, including:
- Cooperation on UN peacekeeping training
- A MoU on debt restructuring under the G20 Common Framework
Ethiopia’s Special Welcome
During his visit, PM Modi was personally welcomed by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali, who drove him to the local Science Museum—a gesture reflecting the strong people-to-people ties and partnership in the Global South. Modi announced that scholarships for Ethiopian students in India would be doubled and expressed gratitude for Ethiopia’s support on the Pulagam terror attack and in counter-terrorism efforts.
Success of Jordan Visit
Prior to Ethiopia, PM Modi completed a successful two-day visit to Jordan, strengthening cooperation in renewable energy, water management, cultural exchange, digital solutions, and UNESCO heritage site twinning. Five MoUs were signed, and discussions with King Abdullah II and Crown Prince Al-Hussein bin Abdullah II further deepened India-Jordan relations.
The recent messages and engagements signal a strengthening of India’s diplomatic and strategic relationships across regions, reaffirming PM Modi’s global outreach and India’s role as a key partner on multiple fronts.
