India has urged the Bangladesh government to ensure that those responsible for the brutal murder of Hindu youth Deepu Chandra Das are brought to justice. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) also dismissed misleading reports in Bangladeshi media about protests in New Delhi, emphasizing that demonstrations outside the Bangladesh High Commission were peaceful.
Protests and Calls for Justice
MEA spokesperson Randeep Jayswal stated, “We are closely monitoring the situation in Bangladesh. Our officials are in contact with Bangladeshi authorities, and we have expressed serious concern over attacks on minorities.”
On Saturday, around 20–25 youths gathered outside the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi to protest the murder of Das in Mymensingh. The demonstrators demanded security for all minorities in Bangladesh and called on Dhaka’s interim government to bring the perpetrators of this “brutal killing” to justice.
Bangladeshi Media Claims Rejected
Some Bangladeshi media outlets alleged that protesters attempted to breach security at the High Commission. Responding to this, Jayswal said, “We have observed misleading reports circulating in certain sections of Bangladeshi media. At no point did any demonstrator attempt to break barriers or disturb security arrangements.” He added that police dispersed the group within minutes, and visual evidence of the peaceful protest is publicly available.
Minority Safety a Major Concern
The MEA reiterated its concern over rising attacks on minorities in Bangladesh, stressing that India is in continuous contact with Bangladeshi authorities. Officials have pressed for accountability in the Das case and for measures to protect minority communities.
The unrest comes in the backdrop of heightened tensions in Bangladesh following the death of student leader Sharif Usman Hadi, a prominent critic of the Sheikh Hasina government. Since the former Prime Minister’s exit in August last year, the Hindu population has reportedly faced multiple anti-minority incidents across the country.
