India and Russia Advancing on Gandhi’s Path: Putin Pays Tribute at Rajghat

New Delhi: On the second day of his two-day visit to India, Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Rajghat on Friday to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation. At Rajghat, Putin signed the visitors’ book and wrote in Russian, praising Gandhi as a great humanitarian who played a pivotal role in the construction of modern India and whose contributions to global peace remain invaluable.

Gandhi’s Principles Still Relevant Today
In his note, Putin highlighted the enduring significance of Gandhi’s principles of freedom, truth, non-violence, and humanity. He wrote that Gandhi envisioned a world where justice, equality, and mutual respect guide international relations. Far from seeking dominance for any single nation, Gandhi advocated for a multilateral and balanced world order, a vision he shared through correspondence with Russian philosopher Leo Tolstoy. Putin added that India and Russia today uphold these same values at the international level, promoting cooperation and respect without coercion.

A Grand Welcome for Putin in India
President Putin arrived in India on Thursday evening, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi personally welcomed him at the airport. The warm reception included a hug and cordial greetings, along with the presentation of a Russian-translated copy of the Bhagavad Gita to Putin. A cultural program was organized to honor the Russian President, which he appreciated. Following the airport ceremony, both leaders departed together in the same vehicle, underscoring the warmth and strength of India–Russia ties.
