IMD Issues Fresh Alert: Rain Likely in 7 North Indian States, Dense Fog Warning for 34 Districts

New Delhi: Even as winter appears to be gradually weakening across North India, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a fresh weather alert, warning that cold conditions may return in the coming days.

According to the IMD, rainfall accompanied by strong winds and lightning is likely to affect several parts of North India between February 16 and February 18, potentially increasing weather-related disruptions. The department has also issued a dense fog warning for 34 districts across multiple states.

Rain Forecast for the Next Three Days

The IMD has predicted rainfall activity in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Ladakh.

  • Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh: Rain likely on February 16 and 17
  • Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh: Heavy rainfall alert for February 17 and 18
  • Punjab, Haryana and North Rajasthan: Possibility of intense rainfall on February 17 and 18
  • Western Uttar Pradesh: Light rain expected at a few places on February 17 and 18
  • Madhya Pradesh: Light rainfall warning issued for February 18 and 19

The weather department has also warned that gusty winds and lightning may accompany rainfall in some areas.

Dense Fog Alert in 34 Districts

The IMD has issued a dense fog alert in several districts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh.

In Uttar Pradesh, fog is expected in districts including Agra, Orai, Ayodhya, Badaun, Baghpat, Ballia, Balrampur, Gorakhpur, Hamirpur, Jhansi, Jalaun, Kanpur and Lucknow.

In Haryana, districts under fog warning include Gurugram, Panipat, Sonipat, Jhajjar, Hisar, Rohtak and Karnal.

In Punjab, dense fog may prevail in Amritsar, Patiala, Firozpur, Gurdaspur, Kapurthala, Ludhiana, Moga and Pathankot.

In Himachal Pradesh, fog conditions may affect Kangra, Lahaul-Spiti, Kullu, Mandi, Hamirpur, Una, Sirmaur and Kinnaur.

Delhi Weather Update

The IMD stated that Delhi is expected to witness clear skies on February 16, with no immediate possibility of rainfall. However, early morning hours may remain chilly. Air quality is also likely to improve, with AQI expected to drop further.

Temperature Outlook Across Major Cities

The forecasted maximum and minimum temperatures for February 16 are as follows:

  • Delhi: 28°C / 13°C
  • Mumbai: 29°C / 23°C
  • Kolkata: 29°C / 16°C
  • Chennai: 29°C / 22°C
  • Lucknow: 28°C / 13°C
  • Patna: 27°C / 14°C
  • Ranchi: 26°C / 13°C
  • Bhopal: 29°C / 16°C
  • Jaipur: 29°C / 14°C
  • Shimla: 18°C / 6°C
  • Nainital: 19°C / 9°C

Rain Likely in Uttar Pradesh

The IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall in Uttar Pradesh on February 17 and 18, accompanied by strong winds and lightning in isolated areas. Districts likely to be affected include Meerut, Ghaziabad, Gautam Buddh Nagar, Shamli, Moradabad, Amroha and Bulandshahr.

Tamil Nadu: Low Pressure System May Develop

Meanwhile, the IMD has indicated that a low-pressure area may develop over the South Bay of Bengal and adjoining Indian Ocean around February 16, which could influence weather conditions in Tamil Nadu.

While dry weather is expected to prevail between February 16 and 18, the department has predicted isolated light rainfall on February 19 and 20 in parts of Tamil Nadu.

Fog-like conditions are also expected to persist in districts such as Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram and Chengalpattu, possibly extending towards Villupuram and Cuddalore.
