Visakhapatnam: Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL) has marked a significant achievement in its collaboration with the Visakhapatnam Port Authority by reaching two major milestones under the 60 Ton Bollard Pull (60T BP) Tug program. On 22 December 2025, the keel-laying ceremony for the first 60T BP tug was successfully conducted. Built entirely with indigenous design and technology, this vessel is being developed by HSL. Simultaneously, formal contracts were signed for the construction of the second 60T BP tug, further cementing the long-standing, trusted partnership between HSL and the Port Authority.
The project aligns with India’s “Maritime India Vision 2030” and the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiative, aimed at modernizing the nation’s key ports. Measuring 32.5 meters in length, the 60T BP tug is specifically designed for complex port operations. These advanced tugs will ensure the safe handling of large vessels, reduce turnaround times, and improve overall operational efficiency. With India’s maritime trade growing rapidly, these tugs are critical for managing increased cargo traffic and enhancing the competitiveness of Visakhapatnam Port in the future.
Key Remarks
Addressing the ceremony, Dr. Madhaiyan Angamuthu, IAS, Chairperson of Visakhapatnam Port Authority, emphasized that timely delivery and high-quality workmanship form the foundation of trust. He said, “Collaboration with HSL has not only expanded port capabilities but has also strengthened the country’s maritime ecosystem.” Dr. Angamuthu further noted that as cargo volumes and targets continue to rise in the coming years, modern tugs and related infrastructure will be essential, expressing hope for deeper cooperation with HSL in future projects.
HSL Chairman and Managing Director Commodore Giridip Singh extended gratitude to Visakhapatnam Port Authority and technical partners M/s Vedam and M/s Solas Marine. He highlighted that the dual milestones—keel-laying and new contract signing—demonstrate HSL’s technical expertise, strong project management, and commitment to timely delivery. Singh added that the program promotes “Make in India” initiatives, supports MSME participation, generates employment, and represents a significant step towards making India self-reliant in the maritime sector.
