New Delhi: India is gearing up for a major diplomatic event as the second India-Arab Foreign Ministers meeting is scheduled to take place in Delhi on January 30-31. More than ten Arab countries have confirmed their participation, including Qatar, UAE, Oman, Sudan, Palestine, Somalia, Mauritania, Comoros, and Libya. Saudi Arabia will be represented by its Deputy Foreign Minister, while confirmation from Lebanon, Syria, and Morocco is still awaited.
Libya’s Historic Participation
A key highlight of the meeting is the presence of Libya’s Foreign Minister, Eltaher S.M. Elbaour, marking the first visit by a Libyan foreign minister to India since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. Elbaour represents the internationally recognized Government of National Unity of Libya, signaling Libya’s re-engagement on the international stage after more than a decade of political upheaval.
Strengthening Diplomatic and Economic Ties
The meeting will serve as a major platform to strengthen diplomatic and economic relations between India and the Arab world, bringing together representatives from over 22 Arab League countries. Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, who previously served as Egypt’s Foreign Minister and the UN Permanent Representative for Egypt, will also attend. Gheit has been the Secretary-General of the Arab League for the past ten years.
This high-level gathering aims to boost cooperation in trade, investment, energy, and strategic partnerships, providing India a unique opportunity to enhance its engagement with the Arab world and promote regional stability and economic growth.
