Health of Unnao Rape Survivor Deteriorates Amid Protests at Jantar Mantar; Supreme Court to Hear CBI Plea Today

The health of the Unnao rape survivor and her mother deteriorated on Sunday amid intense sloganeering and mounting emotional pressure during a protest at Jantar Mantar against the grant of bail to convicted former BJP legislator Kuldeep Singh Sengar. Both were rushed to a hospital after they reportedly felt unwell at the protest site.

The demonstration, organised under the banner of AISA, saw participation from students of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and Delhi University (DU), along with women’s rights activists. Protesters demanded the cancellation of Sengar’s bail and called for the harshest punishment, raising slogans such as “Justice for the Unnao survivor” and “Hang the rapist.” Drumbeats and continuous chanting reflected the anger and anguish of those gathered.

According to eyewitnesses, the survivor and her mother, who arrived at Jantar Mantar around 1 pm along with several women supporters, began to feel uneasy due to the crowd, noise, and emotional strain. Despite attempts by people present to help them with water and seating, their condition worsened. CRPF personnel swiftly escorted the mother and daughter in a vehicle and took them to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Tensions escalated further when a woman carrying posters in support of Kuldeep Singh Sengar reached the protest site. This led to a heated argument between her and the protesters supporting the survivor. Police intervened immediately, removed the woman from the area, and brought the situation under control. Given the sensitive nature of the protest, heavy police deployment had already been made, and senior officers, including DCP Devesh Kumar Mahla, remained present till the evening.

Addressing the gathering before her health deteriorated, the survivor expressed gratitude to the women and students standing with her, saying their support was not just for her, but for every daughter and sister seeking justice in the country. She alleged that she and her family continue to receive death threats and said they no longer feel safe. Appealing to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, she urged that individuals accused of such heinous crimes should not be given space in political parties.

The survivor also reiterated her faith in the Supreme Court, expressing hope that justice would ultimately prevail. She clarified that she was not questioning the High Court as an institution, but raising concerns about the judges who heard the matter. Her mother echoed the fear for their lives, alleging repeated threats, and said the family was seeking time to meet the Prime Minister to convey their concerns.

In a significant remark, the survivor demanded that arguments in her case be conducted in Hindi, stating that proceedings in English had limited her understanding and participation in court. She said that had the arguments been in Hindi, she would have been better able to present her case.

Meanwhile, the Central Bureau of Investigation’s plea related to the Unnao rape case is scheduled to be heard by the Supreme Court today, a hearing that is being closely watched amid growing public outrage and renewed demands for justice.
