New Delhi: A political storm has erupted following controversial remarks by M.R.K. Panneerselvam, the Agriculture Minister of Tamil Nadu and a senior DMK leader, about North Indians. The BJP has sharply criticized the DMK as well as other parties in the opposition coalition for their silence on the issue.

BJP national spokesperson Shahzad Poonawala took to social media to accuse the opposition of harboring hatred, saying, “They have the Constitution on their tongue but a shop of hatred in their hearts.” Poonawala further alleged that DMK leaders have repeatedly made derogatory statements about North Indians, particularly North Indian women, while Congress, SP leader Akhilesh Yadav, and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav remain silent.

Poonawala described this as “not a coincidence but an industry of hate,” highlighting remarks by various DMK leaders:

  • M.R.K. Panneerselvam (DMK Minister): North Indians come to Tamil Nadu only to sell pani puri, work at construction sites, or clean tables.
  • Dayanidhi Maran (DMK MP, Jan 2026): North Indian women are expected to stay at home, cook, and bear children.
  • Durai Murugan (DMK Minister): North Indian culture is filthy and disgusting, with the practice of multiple marriages prevalent.
  • T.R.B. Raja (DMK Minister, 2025): In North India, women are first asked about their husbands’ professions.
  • Other DMK Leaders: Hindi-speaking migrants are cleaning toilets.

Commenting on Panneerselvam’s latest remarks, Poonawala said that North Indians are stereotyped as only capable of low-wage jobs in Tamil Nadu due to language barriers, and criticized the DMK for perpetuating such prejudices.

This controversy comes amid rising political tensions, with BJP calling out the opposition’s silence as complicity in spreading regional bias and divisive rhetoric.
