The Indian Air Force (IAF) has congratulated Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla after The Week magazine named him ‘Man of the Year 2025’ in its December 21 edition. The recognition comes in honor of his pivotal role in the AXIOM-4 mission, which marked India’s growing prominence on the global space stage.
First Indian to Reach the International Space Station
In June this year, Group Captain Shukla became the first Indian to reach the International Space Station (ISS). Completing an 18-day mission, he returned to Earth on July 15, having conducted several scientific experiments operated by ISRO and contributed to research activities aboard the station. Post-mission, he underwent rehabilitation in the United States and returned to India on August 17, where he met President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who welcomed him warmly, acknowledging his historic achievement.
AXIOM-4 Mission: A Milestone for India
The AXIOM-4 mission, executed in collaboration with international partners, was widely celebrated across India. It provided valuable insights into space science, strengthened India’s capabilities for future human spaceflight, and paved the way for the Gaganyaan mission.
Shukla Shares His Space Experience
At a recent event, Group Captain Shukla described his time in space as “a breathtaking experience,” highlighting India’s view from orbit as unparalleled. During his nearly 20-day journey, he conducted multiple scientific experiments and gathered critical data for India’s human spaceflight program, laying the groundwork for a new chapter in the nation’s space exploration journey.
Shukla also emphasized the responsibility of the youth in realizing India’s vision for 2047, noting that the nation’s progress depends on the ambitions and dedication of the next generation. He further praised the growing interest among children in science and the crucial role of teachers in nurturing their dreams of becoming astronauts.

The Indian Air Force hailed Shukla’s recognition as not only a testament to his personal excellence, courage, and dedication but also as a symbol of India’s rising stature in the global space arena.
