Government to Move Privilege Motion Against Rahul Gandhi; Opposition Leader Asked to Respond by 5 PM

New Delhi: The political confrontation in Parliament during the ongoing Budget Session intensified further on Wednesday as the Union Government announced it would initiate a privilege motion against Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of misleading the House and making baseless allegations against the government.

Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju stated that the Centre is preparing to file a privilege notice against Rahul Gandhi and that the Congress leader has been asked to submit his response by 5 PM.

Rijiju Accuses Rahul Gandhi of Misleading Parliament

Addressing a press conference, Rijiju said both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha function under well-defined rules and procedures, and members are required to follow parliamentary protocol, particularly while making serious allegations.

“We are going to file a privilege notice against Rahul Gandhi for misleading the House and making unfounded statements,” Rijiju said.

He added that if any MP intends to level serious charges against another member, the allegations must be backed by evidence and should be raised only after issuing prior notice as per parliamentary rules.

What Triggered the Controversy?

According to Rijiju, Rahul Gandhi made “false and irresponsible accusations” against the government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, claiming that the Prime Minister had “sold India and Indian interests.”

The minister also alleged that Rahul Gandhi made serious remarks against Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri without following the required parliamentary procedure.

“I have requested that Rahul Gandhi be called to the House so that he can substantiate his statements,” Rijiju said.

Rahul Gandhi’s Remarks on US Trade Deal

The controversy erupted after Rahul Gandhi accused the government of compromising India’s national interests during negotiations for a trade agreement with the United States.

He alleged that the Centre had “mortgaged” key sectors such as agriculture, IT, data, and public welfare, claiming that the government had shown excessive submission to former US President Donald Trump.

Rahul Gandhi further alleged that the Prime Minister had weakened India’s energy security and surrendered before foreign powers.

Rijiju Calls Remarks ‘Absurd’, Demands Removal from Records

Reacting strongly, Rijiju described Rahul Gandhi’s statements as “absurd” and insisted that criticism must be constructive and based on facts. He also demanded that objectionable terms used by Rahul Gandhi be expunged from parliamentary proceedings.

During the session, the presiding officer Jagdambika Pal reportedly advised Rahul Gandhi to avoid using unparliamentary language. While Gandhi acknowledged the caution, he continued his attack on the government.

Parliament Witnesses Uproar

Following Rahul Gandhi’s “surrender” remarks, Parliament witnessed loud protests and sloganeering. Opposition members backed Gandhi’s claims, while ruling party MPs strongly objected, leading to disruption in proceedings.

Responding sharply, Rijiju said, “No one has been born who can sell this country,” adding that Prime Minister Modi remains one of the strongest leaders India has seen.

The development signals yet another escalation in the political standoff between the ruling coalition and the Opposition during the Budget Session.
