Government Issues Over 2,300 Content Blocking Orders via Sehyog Portal in One Year; WhatsApp, Facebook Lead the List

Data from the Indian government’s Sehyog Portal has revealed that the government issued an average of six content blocking orders per day between October 2024 and October 2025. Over the year, more than 2,300 blocking orders were sent to 19 online platforms.

Sehyog Portal Streamlines Content Blocking
Launched in October 2024, the Sehyog Portal is a single-window platform that allows government agencies to send content blocking orders under Section 79(3)(b) of the IT Act. Previously, agencies had to email each platform individually. Over 118 online platforms are now onboarded on this portal. The portal is used by nominated officers from states, union territories, and seven central agencies.

WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram Lead the Orders
According to data from the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C), out of 2,312 blocking orders issued during the year, 78% were sent to Meta services alone.

  • WhatsApp received 1,392 orders
  • Facebook received 255 orders
  • Instagram received 169 orders
  • YouTube received 176 orders
  • Telegram received 123 orders
  • Google received 93 orders
  • Apple received 43 orders
  • Amazon received 23 orders

Other platforms, including Microsoft, LinkedIn, and Snapchat, received a total of 38 orders. Each order could include multiple links or accounts to be blocked.

Operation Sindoor: Thousands of Accounts Blocked
The month with the highest activity was May 2025, during Operation Sindoor, when thousands of accounts allegedly operated from Pakistan and spreading online propaganda were blocked. At that time, over 8,000 accounts were blocked, including accounts of some news organizations and prominent individuals.

The data highlights the government’s strict monitoring and enforcement of online content regulations, with WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube being the primary platforms affected.
