Fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya, notorious for his unpaid debts in India, celebrated his 70th birthday in grand style in London, with former IPL chairman Lalit Modi hosting the event. Despite being declared bankrupt in the UK and facing multiple legal cases in both India and Britain, Mallya continues to enjoy a lavish lifestyle.
The birthday party, held on December 16 at Modi’s six-bedroom residence in the upscale Belgravia Square, drew several high-profile guests from India and abroad. Attendees included fashion designer Manish Malhotra, British actor Idris Elba, and entrepreneur Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw.
The event featured an array of Indian and Lebanese cuisine, reflecting the heritage of Modi’s partner Reema Bawri, who is Lebanese. A DJ played hits from the 70s and 80s, while desserts included red, white, and green cupcakes decorated with golden letters spelling “KING,” alongside piles of gold chocolate coins. Photographer Jim Rydell, based in Florida, shared a picture of Mallya posing with his arm around Modi’s shoulder.
Known for his extravagant lifestyle, Mallya, often called the “King of Good Times,” continues to fight extradition to India, where he is accused of financial irregularities related to loans taken for Kingfisher Airlines from IDBI Bank in 2009. Despite losing a court battle in 2020 against extradition, he remains in the UK, residing in homes in London and Tevyn.
The celebration underscores Mallya’s enduring penchant for luxury and high-profile socializing, even as legal troubles follow him across continents.
