Exports Soar! Oman Recognizes India’s Halal Certification, Government Eyes 55 More Muslim Nations

New Delhi: In a major boost for Indian exports, Oman has officially recognized India’s Halal meat certification, a step that could open doors to over 55 other Muslim-majority countries. Halal certification ensures that meat is prepared according to Islamic guidelines, making it safe and permissible for consumption.

Government Initiative
Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated that the Indian government has been engaging with Gulf countries, which are among the largest buyers of Halal products, to ensure formal recognition of Indian Halal-certified products rather than relying on informal approvals.

“This recognition by Oman will eliminate repetitive testing and certification, reduce costs, and simplify market access for Indian exporters,” Goyal said. “We are emphasizing that only officially approved Halal certifications, issued under the India Conformity Assessment Scheme (i-CAS Halal) by recognized agencies, will be accepted. This ensures that religious sentiments are respected through a formal and standardized process, not through decades-old irregular practices.”

Background
Previously, many private entities issued Halal certificates that lacked government approval. In March 2023, the DGFT issued a notification mandating that only certificates issued under i-CAS Halal would be valid. By October 2024, a list of at least 15 countries—including Oman, UAE, Bangladesh, Turkey, Philippines, and Singapore—was identified where Halal certification is required for meat exports.

Benefits for India
This recognition is a significant opportunity for Indian meat exporters, helping them strengthen their presence in international markets. The move not only enhances India’s economic prospects but also promotes its cultural and religious sensitivity. By establishing India as a credible player in the global Halal meat market, the government aims to secure long-term growth and international acceptance for its Halal-certified products.
