Exclusive: Sheikh Hasina Breaks Silence on Minority Plight in Bangladesh, Speaks on Upcoming Elections

New Delhi: Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India amid political unrest, has broken her silence for the first time on the plight of minorities in Bangladesh. In an exclusive interview with Navbharat Times, Hasina spoke candidly about attacks on Hindus, the upcoming February elections, and the impact of the current Yunus administration on Bangladesh’s democracy.

On Tarique Rahman’s Return
Hasina criticized the return of BNP leader Tarique Rahman, noting, “The people of Bangladesh must remember that Tarique Rahman spent several years in exile in London, far removed from the daily struggles of ordinary citizens. He fled the country after allegedly aiding in the misappropriation of public funds during his late mother, former PM Khaleda Zia’s tenure. This is not a matter of political disagreement but of accountability. The BNP leadership has aligned with extremist elements for short-term gains, choosing exclusion, intimidation, and opportunism over democratic choices.”

On the Upcoming Elections
Regarding the February 2026 parliamentary elections, Hasina warned, “The question is not whether elections will be held, but whether they will be fair. Elections without genuine democratic options are merely symbolic. The current government was not elected by the people—it has rewritten laws and the constitution to prevent Bangladesh’s most popular party from participating. If the Awami League were allowed to contest, more than half the voters would support us. This is precisely why we are banned. How can a government, which was never chosen by the people, have the right to ban a party that has been democratically elected nine times?”

On Attacks Against Minorities
Hasina condemned the systematic targeting of minorities, saying, “A government’s primary responsibility is to protect its citizens. The interim Yunus government has failed this duty and actively encouraged repression. During my tenure, we struggled to control extremist groups, many of which now hold significant influence and maintain links to terrorist organizations. The current environment of appeasement towards extremist forces has created this crisis.”

On India’s Role
Expressing gratitude for India’s support, Hasina stated, “The Indian government has openly criticized human rights violations and political repression under the Yunus administration. Minorities face daily violence, and Dhaka’s rhetoric has been increasingly hostile. India understands that the prosperity of both countries is intertwined, and I hope that once democratic governance is restored in Bangladesh, our two nations can work together again.”

On Her Party’s Future and Leadership
Hasina emphasized that the Awami League is not a family party, but one of millions of Bangladeshis committed to democracy, freedom, and tolerance. “Our government has lifted millions out of poverty, empowered women, and maintained peace for all communities. Our party has earned the trust of the people nine times and will continue to serve both in government and opposition.”

On Bilateral Relations with India
Hasina warned that the Yunus administration’s tolerance of attacks on minorities and intimidation of Indian missions has strained ties. “The current administration neither possesses experience nor a mandate to conduct foreign policy. India’s patience has been commendable, but the situation has already caused friction in bilateral relations.”

First Public Address Since Fleeing Bangladesh
For the first time after leaving Bangladesh, Hasina publicly condemned the Yunus government via audio statement. She questioned the possibility of free and fair elections under Yunus, citing oppression of women and minorities and the breakdown of law and order. She has also demanded a UN investigation into last year’s incidents. According to AFP, her public statements could further strain India-Bangladesh relations.
